IBM AS/400 and iSeries Label Printing Solution:
IntelliBar Thermal Transfer Label Printers

Label400.com is a service of IntelliTech International, Inc., manufacturer of IntelliBar Thermal Transfer Label Printers. This page will aid you in the process of identifying and specifying a complete bar code label printing solution for your IBM AS/400 or iSeries system. It also provides useful links to additional sources of information to aid you in your selection process.

Several versions of IntelliBar label printers easily integrate into AS/400 and iSeries midrange systems in a variety of ways. IntelliBar printers for IBM AS/400 and iSeries are configured based on the native system printing language and the physical connection to the system network. IntelliBar printers support AFP/IPDS (all eight towers), SCS, HP PLC5 and line printer languages, such as Magnum Code V, IGP and PGL. Network connectivity is achieved via twinax, coax, Ethernet token ring or 10BaseT, wireless Ethernet (802.11b) or parallel connection to a 5250 terminal.

No additional special application software, proprietary printer drivers or costly custom programming in a proprietary printer command language is required to integrate an IntelliBar printer into an AS/400 or iSeries system. There is no easier way for AS/400 and iSeries users to quickly begin industrial bar code label printing using their existing data stream, printer command language and network than with an IntelliBar printer.

A complete AS/400 and iSeries label printing solution includes:
  • An IntelliBar thermal label printer
  • Label design software
  • Labels
  • Ribbons
  • Additional printer options
  • An IntelliTech service contract
Determine your AS/400 or iSeries bar code label printing solution by following the steps below to select the IntelliBar printer configuration, label stock and ribbon and any additional printer options needed for your requirements.

Step 1: Select the appropriate printer for your requirements.

Choose an IntelliBar Label Printer. There are several models of IntelliBar printers that can print a single label or thousands of labels with crisp 300 dpi text, graphics and barcodes directly from your AS/400 system. Determine the model of printer for your requirements by choosing the print width and print speed for your needs:
  1. IntelliBar Model M48
4.25" max print width at speeds up to 8 ips*

  2. IntelliBar Model M412
4.25" max print width at speeds up to 12 ips

  3. IntelliBar Model M88
8.65" max print width at speeds up to 8 ips

*ips = inches per second

Step 2: Determine the printer series that matches your system's printer language.

Select the IntelliBar printer series that corresponds to the printer language that your system uses.

AS Series AFP/IPDS
The IntelliBar AS Series printers are configured as IPDS printers with IBM 4028 emulation. IntelliBar AS printers are the only thermal label printers that support all eight IPDS towers. This compliance allows accurate printing of existing files and data streams without software conversion or modification.

Standard Series HP PCL5
The IntelliBar Standard Series printers are configured as HP PCL5 printers with LaserJet III emulation.

Step 3: Choose the connectivity solution for your system.

  1. Ethernet 10BaseT Network
Connection between an Ethernet network and an IntelliBar printer is accomplished by using the factory installed internal 10BaseT print server option.

Step 4: Choose the right label for your requirement.
Labels should be selected based on the required life expectancy of the label, the environmental demands made on the label, requirements for durability, resistance to abrasion and consideration for the surface to which the label is expected to adhere. IntelliTech supplies thermal labels that are available in an extensive selection of paper and synthetic media with an equally broad selection of adhesives. IntelliTech offers two label programs that meet almost any requirement.
IntelliTech Ready Label Program - A broad selection of thermal labels available in standard sizes and materials ready for quick shipment.

IntelliTech Custom Label Program - Thermal labels that are custom designed and manufactured to specifically satisfy your requirements. A broad selection of thermal tag and ticket media is also available.

For help in choosing a label that meets your requirements, visit the IntelliTech University Media Selection page.
Step 5: Choose the correct IntelliBar thermal transfer ribbon for your specific label.
IntelliBar Ribbons are available in several sizes, ink types and colors. The type of IntelliBar Ribbon used should be selected based on the label material and the required image durability.

For help choosing a ribbon type, visit the IntelliTech University Ribbon Selection page.
Step 6: Select any necessary printer options for your needs.
IntelliBar printers can be configured with a variety of options for particular media handling needs, such as an internal or external label rewinder, a media cutter, or a specialty media sensor. Additional memory and a high visibility Vacuum Fluorescent display are also available.

Visit the IntelliBar options pages to review the various options available.

Step 7: Choose the service program that meets your needs.
A variety of post-warranty service arrangements are available for IntelliBar printers, ranging from simple time and materials billing to premium service contracts that provide overnight delivery of a loaner printer until your printer is repaired. For details of the IntelliBar Service contracts, visit the IntelliTech Service Programs section.
